Picks of the week! 20th September 2024

Make some room in your playlists because we've got some bumper new music selections for you this week!

It is a bumper edition this week as so much great stuff is out! Ease into Autumn with our picks of singles and albums out now!

Mugger- ‘Get A Clue‘

This week’s first pick comes from Austin, TX with hardcore act Mugger. Blending the snarling vocals and frayed riffs of 70s punk with the in-yer-face ferocity of hardcore, Mugger are like the best of both worlds. They’ve steadily been making a name for themselves beyond their local scene, touring with the likes of Negative Approach and sharing stages with Circle Jerks and Gel. ‘Get A Clue‘ is their first EP and at just 2 tracks, it is five minutes well spent to hear the four piece give it all they got across the title track and the single ‘Find Out‘ featuring John Brannon. Find your streaming and purchasing options HERE.

The Happys- ‘She Found Love‘

How about a poignant song about heartbreak and acceptance now? But make it catchy as hell so I don’t cry into my pumpkin spice latte. Well, Bay Area’s The Happys have us covered with new track ‘She Found Love‘ featuring Sublime’s Eric Wilson on vocal duty. It’s a cute and upbeat sounding track despite being about the gut wrenching feeling of seeing your past love move on with someone else. A gentle acoustic start gives way to a rousing, sing-along chorus with irresistible melodies. Formed in 2012 by songwriter Nick Petty, The Happys lineup includes Ale’ Sanchez on lead guitar, Brett Brazil on bass, and Elijah Smetzer on drums. Stream the track HERE and look out for the band’s album- coming soon!

Yur Mum- ‘Immigrant‘

The London-via-Brazil duo of Anelise Kunz (bass & vocals) and Fabio Couto (drums) are collectively known as Yur Mum and the ruckus that these 2 can create between themselves is pretty much legendary at this point. Mixing elements of metal and punk alongside influences from their home country of Brazil, the Yur Mum sound is always unique and complex. Their new track ‘Immigrant‘ is a cathartic response to racism and hate, told from the perspective of those often seen as coming from the “wrong side” of history. The track features on their excellent 2024 album ‘Duality‘ and sees Couto take vocal duties for the first time. Stream ‘Immigrant‘ HERE.

Fervents- ‘Plastic Snake Factory‘

Belgian punk trio Fervents release another track from upcoming EP ‘Plastic Snake Factory‘ (out 4th October) and this time it is the title track! This new single follows on from the already-released EP tracks ‘Faith‘ and ‘Let Go‘, which came out earlier this year, and it is another sharp and accomplished track that bodes very well for the quality of the full EP. The band hail from Liège in the south-east of Belgium and following on from 2021’s self-titled EP, the band are going in a darker direction inspired by the grunge and hardcore punk scene. You can stream the new track HERE.

Fightmilk- ‘That Thing You Did‘

Back to Blighty now, with Brixton-formed quartet Fightmilk and the new single ‘That Thing You Did‘, taken from the band’s upcoming third album ‘No Souvenirs‘ (released on 15th November). This bouncy, riff-driven, scathing track sees singer and lyricist Lily Rae explore trying (and failing) to forgive someone after a bad relationship. “It’s about refusing to forgive somebody,” Lily adds. “Just because somebody says sorry, it doesn’t mean you have to accept it.” Amen to that! And so if you’ve got someone in mind that just hasn’t earned your forgiveness quite yet, then blast this track out and defiantly shout out “I’m never getting over it!” along with the band and feel that catharsis.

Stoke Signals- ‘Make Dying Fun’

We have featured Stoke Signals on Punk Rock Philosophy before, their track ‘Holy Fangs‘ was a pick back in August. Well the band have now released their full length album ‘Make Dying Fun‘ and as expected, it is 12 tracks of punk bangers! You can check out newest single ‘Neon‘ as proof that this band are full throttle- they give 100% to every second of their tracks and play like a band that have been together for a decade. It is a pretty explosive debut, overflowing with passion and power. What more could you want? Here’s all the links you need.

The Bad Ups- ‘Better Than You‘

Another Punk Rock Philsophy fave, Philadelphia’s The Bad Ups are back with a new track from forthcoming album ‘Life of Sin‘ (out 27th September). Channelling that quintessential Epitaph records sound, the four piece are making their mark with their own spin on classic punk elements, incorporating ska, reggae, pop punk and oi. ‘Better Than You‘ is available now (click HERE) but in one week’s time you can hear the whole album so make sure you pre-save, HERE.

That’s it for this week’s peeps- see you next time!
