This week I have some great tracks that are fresh out PLUS an exciting re-release from a great 90s band!
What’s new?
My first pick this week is from South London punks Honey Joy. They are releasing their 3rd album- ‘III‘ in July via Everything Sucks Music and this is their first single from that album ‘Language‘. A fab bouncy track that clocks in at under 2 minutes, vocalist Megan Tinsley sounds both sweet and jagged in this song about the importance of articulating yourself. A song for your Summer playlist.
Next up is rock ‘n’ roll sister duo Dog Party who have just released their seventh album ‘Dangerous’. Their fuzzy rock sound sees the sister’s dual vocals gently wrap around some gorgeous guitar riffs and retro sensibilities (think Angel Olsen/90s indie/60s girl group mash ups). Proper sumptuous stuff as exemplified by the new single ‘Running With My Heart‘.
Clown Sounds are somewhat of a punk ‘supergroup’ in that they comprise of members of FYP, Toys That Kill, The Arrivals etc. The band have an LP coming out in July- ‘Par For the Course‘- (their third offering) and we can get a sample of it with new video ‘Tuck Belly Up’. It is some pretty strong ragged garage punk thumpers if this new track is anything to go by.
OK, I saved this for last because I am very excited. San Diego’s Blair Gun are back this year with their second album ‘There Are No Rival Clones Here‘, a follow up to 2023’s ‘Blaspheme Queen‘. Their 2023 LP was in my top 3 releases for that year and is in almost constant rotation, I would definitely recommend you check it out NOW if you haven’t already. Their first single from the new album is called ‘The Thief‘ and it seems this incredibly promising young band have maintained their ear for complexity and a demonstrable love of the craft of putting together textured indie punk bangers.
Aaaaaand the last pick is always a band that have been around a while but are a relatively new discovery for me. This week it is the awesome Hissyfits. Formed in 1996, Suzi Blade and Princess mixed pop punk anthems with surf rock twang to create a fun and badass body of work which is now getting the re-release treatment with ‘Pre-Hissoric’ which includes some never released demos and classic Hissyfits tracks across two volumes. Check it out.
